When I strolled past the Aspesi store on Via Montenapoleone, this past September, I had to stop, smile and pull out my camera along with the rest of the tourist crowd gathering on the sidewalk to capture an image of one of the cutest, coolest window displays that I had ever seen. Rows of doll-like clothing were lined up in the window. The miniature duplicates of in-store clothing were the perfect hook to catch onlookers outside and urge them to set foot into the large store which sells casualwear for men and women. Their winter window is just as heart-warming with a snow-white, life-size polar bear sleeping soundly in the cosy, playful store decorated with floral artwork in bold red and navy blue.
The pride and joy of Alberto Aspesi, who started the brand in 1961, the Aspesi headquarters in Legnano, Italy, produces simple yet quirky designs which retail in their monobrand stores across Europe and in Japan. Created for men who are rough around the edges and women who are feminine but not too girlish, these understated and frill-free items are practical enough to be worn every other day in an unconventional mixture that expresses personal style and attitude.
The hefty price tags on Aspesi wear are warranted by the quality of their fabrics which are tweaked and improved every year after extensive research is done. Take a look at this women’s coat made from soft Scottish Shetland wool. It’s a classic-styled trench coat that can be worn buttoned up or undone instead, for a care-free look. This dark blue men’s coat, lined in wool, is cut from top quality Japanese ring-spun cotton and features upper slant pockets and lower flap pockets for a street smart look.
