I clicked my heels across the street to the Pisa Orologeria, a boutique on Milan’s Via MonteNapoleone that deals exclusively in Rolex timepieces to meet the lovely long-haired brunette, Chiara, one of several young members of the Pisa family who play a role in running the business. I was about to push open the glass door to enter when I heard my name called out behind me. It was Chiara who came rushing over from their second boutique store around the corner on Via Verri.
With almost every Rolex model in stock here, you can have an over-the-counter consultation with one of their knowledgeable staff to find the watch that’s perfect for you. The combination of wooden panels and monitors, that change their display according to the season from sea blue to lush greenery, creates a calm atmosphere to deliberately allow you the pleasure of shopping in a relaxed and unpressurized environment. Chiara ushered me up to the second floor which offers a more intimate setting with wooden tables and chairs for clients who prefer more privacy. She then introduced me to their Daytona piece, a large mechanical, self-winding watch that consists of a rose-gold casing, a ceramic scratch-proof bezel, an ivory face and leather straps. Interestingly, despite its size, this piece can be worn on a woman’s delicate wrist as well.
To reach the workshop on the third floor, we opted to ride the glass elevator instead of climbing the spiral staircase because it offers the best view from which to marvel at their mega-sized botanical wall and the church’s breath-taking bell tower – which unfortunately, does not sound. Here, I met Roberto, one of the technicians tasked with cleaning, oiling and restoring these luxury Swiss watches. He used a pair of tweezers to replace a thin plastic rim that would instantly improve the waterproof function before showing me an odd-looking, merry-go-round gizmo which acts like a mechanical arm with six ‘wrists’. These turn around in all directions to test the watches’ internal movement.
My visit ended with a trip up to the fourth floor which thanks to the unforgettable bird’s eye view of Via Montenapoleone below, is the perfect spot reserved for presentations and cocktail parties. It was at this precise moment that a rebellious tear crept out from the corner of my eye… The result of gratitude, disbelief and excitement… I could believe that I was lucky enough to have that image imprinted in my memory. Chiara and I had a heart-to-heart conversation about Italy; her birth country and my favourite place on the planet. We reminisced about our vacations in romantic Rome, the rich history and culture… but like Chiara explained, the one thing that will always put Italy a cut above the rest is its people; a stylish nation respected worldwide for their innate taste and trend-setting know-how.
