Milan Day 4 – Larusmiani factory, Galasso menswear and my Testoni gift

It’s said that one learns something new everyday. My latest journey of discovery began with an excursion to the Larusmiani textile factory. Giuseppe drove me there to show me first-hand how their luxurious fabrics are created. I had never been inside a textile factory before and I cannot possibly explain how truly enlightening this experience was. I got to meet all the staff, inspect their special samples rubbing each piece between my fingertips, watch the quality control process as computerized systems detect the tiniest of flaws and even see the large ‘volt’ in which their millions of metres of fabric are stored.

When I got back to MonteNapoleone around lunchtime, I dived straight into my writing starting with a visit to the A Testoni store. As always, their staff were wonderful and eager to divulge the intricacies of their Bolognese footwear and accessories. Chocolate brown leather with hints of orange and cobalt blue are evident in both ladies sandals and bags as well as moccasins, loafers and laptop cases for men. I was taken aback by the kindest gesture when the manager presented me with a special gift – an adorable white bag – their way of saying ‘thank you’ for their inclusion in the MonteNapoleone shopping guide. My following stops included the Buccellati jewellery store and Pisa Orologeria – host to Meritalia’s colorful sofas during the Salone – to see their fine collection of Date-Time Rolex pieces.

I returned to my apartment in Segrate in the afternoon, to doll up for a night of event-hopping. The Angelo Galasso store was my first port of call where unconventional menswear takes centre-stage. A young man served me a piece of Parmesan cheese with blueberry juice while I admired the python zip-up jackets accompanied by python travel bags, belts and shoes all neatly arranged in what seems like a gigantic walk-in closet lined in navy blue velvet. Shirts and blazers in a variety of eccentric floral and polka dot prints gives otherwise ordinary menswear items a contemporary, yet sophisticated edge.

Oh, and did I mention that the Spring 2012 issue of the MonteNapoleone shopping guide is now available?
