What started off as a gorgeous sunny day in Novate, ended with a rainstorm in Milano. I was almost tricked into leaving my umbrella behind, but I have been in the fashion capital long enough to know that everyday could be a bad hair day with high humidity in the summer and the promise of some drizzle every grey day of autumn.
In all the time that I have been in Milan studying the weather patterns, the culture and feasting on traditional pizza and pasta, I was salivating for something a lot spicier like my mother’s home-cooked curry. To satisfy my craving, I braved the rain once again and arranged to meet my old friend, Mariano, who was quite willing to try out the amazing Indian cuisine at Ristorante Tara in Via Cirillo near L’Arco Delle Pace, despite obvious concern on whether or not his unaccustomed tummy would cope with all the chilli. As a starter, we ordered vegetable samoosas followed by tandoori chicken with basmati rice as well as creamy butter chicken and naan. Two pots of spicy masala tea warmed us up but left very little room for burfee ice cream.
Owned by my friend, Ashwindar, this restaurant has the most wonderful eastern ambience achieved with opulent lanterns, painted walls and a beautiful back-lit picture of a temple. It’s plain to see that he is a people’s person who befriends all his clients, and just like Mariano, they promise to return again and again. So, if you’re looking for alternative cuisine in Milan, catch tram line 1 or 19 to the beautiful Arch (L’Arco Delle Pace) at the beginning of Corso Sempione and navigate to Ristorante Tara around the corner. For dessert, we headed to Shokolat, a gelateria located a few metres from Piazza Virgilio (use tram line 1). There were at least five different types of chocolate ice cream on offer and of course, my choice was “Cioccolato con Peperoncino” (chocolate with chilli pepper).
Now that I am all chilli’d out, I could easily survive another week until my next masala fix but Ashwindar has invited me to sample the dishes at his new restaurant, Dawat, tomorrow night
