An orientalised Indian dinner at the new Dawat Ristorante

I feel like a slug. A second night of eating spicy Indian food but this time, completely on the house thanks to my friend, Ashwindar, who invited me to sample the dishes at his newest restaurant, Dawat, only a few metres away from the Gruppo Proedi office on the opposite end of Corso Sempione, which means I will be eating samoosas for lunch anytime I crave it. How’s that for convenience?

We arranged to meet at 8pm but I got there early and passed time sipping masala tea in isolation while scanning the menu. When Ashwindar arrived, I explained that I was completely confused with the wide selection and asked him to surprise me with any chicken or fish dish of his choice. A delectable orientalised fish curry was served with garlic naan, one of a number of typically Indian dishes that are influenced by the Far East, and Ashwindar’s restaurants are the only places in Milan where you can savour these recipes. He decided to incorporate these oriental influences to cater to his Indian clientele who would want something slightly different to what they could easily prepare at home themselves.

Having been opened for just over two weeks now, the place filled up quickly and it seems as though success sticks to Ashwindar like coconut to a syruped gulaab jamun. While I tried to eat as lady-like as possible, Ash sat next to me chatting about Milan Expo 2015 which is themed around food and feeding the world. His eyes widened with excitement when he spoke of the business opportunities that it would bring and how Dawat – his personal expo project – is strategically located near the Domodossola Fiera area in preparation for crowds of foreigners in search of alternative cuisine.

I am expecting guests from South Africa to visit Milan next week and since I will be taking them around the city to eat and be entertained, I have already reserved a table for us, and by then Ashwindar would have put the final decor touches to achieve just the right ambience.
