The month-end Sunday market at Naviglio Grande

On the last Sunday of every month in Milan, there’s one place you have to be – not only because there’s so much to see but because there really is something for everyone. The market on the banks of Naviglio Grande, one of the long river-like waterways perfected by Leonardo Da Vinci, is where art, eccentricity and vintage fuse bringing an endless line up of dealers selling everything from furniture, paintings and fur coats to jewels, Venetian light fittings and Disney figurines.

This Sunday, however, an empty canal meant that water was not the main attraction but with the jovial, care-free atmosphere created by the sound of live street bands, clapping fans and chatty groups filling the bars, cafés and ristoranti, I had every reason to buy two cups of gelato as I moved from one amusing stall to the next.

I arrived at the Navigli using tram 2 from Duomo (Via Torino). I got off at Porta Genova (metro green line) and walked across to the first sign of umbrellas and bustling crowds on Via Casale.

Women were loving these vintage designer bags in pristine condition; Prada, Versace, Coco Chanel, Trussardi and Louis Vuitton.

The selection of ladies’ bijoux and chunky resin jewels was simply mind-boggling…

I discovered a second branch of my favourite, Gelateria Amorino, so while I savoured a second cup of coconut and cinnamon ice cream, I couldn’t help but notice more interesting people and quirky things…

The most amazing ‘glamour’ artwork that celebrates all things Milanese from “Studio Pisati Da Milano“. The owner paints all the original works in his gallery shop himself!

I picked this lady out of the crowd… What do you think of those swan shades? Brilliant!

The StraRipa Bar was rocking with a band playing just inside the door and on the other side, food and a Fiat… I couldn’t decide which I wanted more…

Yup, I was just disappointed that the canal was empty because I find the sight and sound of water very soothing. It would just have made the day more than perfect.
